At approximately 1:30am on Tuesday, March 26 2024, the 10,000 TEU vessel Dali struck a support of Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge after losing power. The bridge carried I695 across the Patapsco River and unfortunately whole sections of the bridge collapsed into the water.
Search and rescue operations are trying to find members of a crew who were making repairs to the roadway at the time of the strike. 2 People were rescued this morning but 6 remain missing. All of us at Alba Wheels Up are hoping for the best possible outcome to these search and rescue efforts.
The Port of Baltimore is closed to ocean traffic indefinitely. Incoming vessels are being rerouted to the ports of Norfolk, Philadelphia, and NY/NJ. Truck operations at the terminals at Baltimore are still underway.
Alba Wheels Up’s teams are communicating directly with affected customers to ensure disposition of all affected cargo and future planned shipments.
The vessel and all its cargo will likely be detained during the investigation that is now underway.
President Biden has confirmed the Army Corp of Engineers will lead wreckage removal and the government will bear the full cost of rebuilding the bridge.
No official reopening timeline has been communicated but it could take 4 weeks or more to clear the channel.
