When the pandemic first took hold and the demand for PPE soared, Alba Wheels-Up had a number of clients who saw an opportunity to meet the moment and utilize their deep experience in garment and apparel manufacturing and sourcing in Asia and pivot to the highly-in-demand PPE.
As the delta variant surges and the U.S. is sadly recording more than 100,000 new cases again as of today, their investment in planning may be called up on again to help the U.S. get through the balance of the year, especially as many states and school systems are returning to masking requirements and hospitalizations are once again surging.
Alba Wheels-Up encourages anyone who has not yet been vaccinated but is looking for their closest vaccination site to visit vaccines.gov. Just enter your ZIP code and you’ll be presented with multiple nearby options.
Two companies on America’s east and west coasts both took similar paths and Alba was pleased to help them and their companies remain active and maintain employment through the pandemic.
One client realized that the initial stay-at-home orders meant consumers would cease purchasing textiles and fashion and conserve their disposable income. The client reached into their supply chains when Asian factories reopened and when ships once again began sailing and the never-ending stream of freighters and passenger freighters were operating, Alba Wheels-Up helped the client move 15 million masks, 5 million gowns and 5 million boxes of nitrile gloves to the United States.
New to FDA-regulated items, Alba helped the client secure all the necessary FDA approvals before the cargo began moving. Once it arrived in the United States, shipments quickly moved through Customs and FDA without delay.
The second client saw an identical future where their customers’ buying patterns were changed virtually overnight. A relationship with the World Bank allowed them to become one of only two suppliers of PPE masks, gowns and gloves to the organization. Similar to our other customer, the world of PPE classification and regulations was new to them, but Alba’s deep expertise and experience managing clearances of FDA-regulated goods meant while the client was realigning their manufacturing, we were registering them with FDA and getting the clearance process ready to receive an ongoing stream of shipments.
Alba’s logistics expertise enabled the client to supply other countries as well. Ecuador, Mozambique, the Philippines and Mongolia were the recipients of the largest shipments. Alba helped the client ship 2.7 million isolation gowns and 3.5 million KN95 masks to Ecuador alone. 1.5 million masks were shipped to Mozambique and 1.7 million boxes of nitrile gloves to the Philippines.
The depth and experience of Alba Wheels-Up customs brokerage and freight forwarding teams was put to the test by these two clients early in the pandemic – and Alba delivered.
