US and Japan Expand Organic Trade Opportunities
Effective October 1st, 2025, the United States and Japan have expanded their organic equivalence arrangement to include alcoholic beverages. Products certified under either USDA Organic standards, or the Japanese Agricultural Standard – and meeting the terms of the arrangement – may now be sold in the other country without additional organic certification.
- USDA-certified alcohol producers gain streamlined access to the Japanese market
- Both countries’ producers now follow equivalent standards for production, processing, ingredients, and labeling
- There’s a reduction in compliance costs the update supports a more level playing field for organic alcohol trade
- More information is available here
The United States also maintains organic equivalence arrangements with Canada, the EU, Korea, Switzerland, Taiwan, and the United Kingdom.
Reciprocal Tariffs for Switzerland and Liechtenstein to be Reduced
On November 14th, the Trump Administration agreed the framework for a trade agreement with Switzerland and Liechtenstein. US tariffs on goods from Switzerland and Liechtenstein will be capped at 15% in a similar arrangement to the agreement with the EU.
On the Swiss and Liechtenstein sides, industrial and agricultural product tariffs will be reduced or removed, benefiting fruits, nuts, proteins, chemicals, and alcohol product exports from the US. The final agreement is yet to be communicated but you can read the details of the framework here.
