FDA Intends to Extend Compliance Date for Food Traceability Rule

March 21, 2025

We want to share an important update from theU.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regarding the Food Traceability Rule. The FDA has announced its intention to extend the compliance date by 30 months until around June 2028, providing additional time for businesses to fully implement the rule’s requirements.

While the compliance date will be extended, the FDA remains committed to enforcing the full scope of the rule, which aims to enhance food safety by ensuring faster identification and removal of potentially contaminated food from the market. This delay is intended to allow all stakeholders—especially those reliant on supply chain coordination—to successfully comply with the new traceability recordkeeping requirements.

What you need to know:

  • The final rule establishes additional recordkeeping requirements for those who manufacture, process, pack, or hold foods on the Food Traceability List.
  • Although some businesses were on track to meet the original January 2026 deadline, industry-wide concerns about supply chain readiness prompted this extension of 30 months to around June 2028.
  • The FDA will use this additional time to continue working with stakeholders, providing technical assistance, tools, and resources to support compliance.

This rule applies to both domestic and foreign entities producing food for US consumption.
