The U.S. Senate has confirmed Dr. Martin A. Makary as the 27th Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) with bipartisan support.
Dr. Makary is a well-respected surgeon, scientist, and health policy expert known for his work in improving patient safety and healthcare outcomes. He has authored over 300 peer-reviewed medical articles and founded the Johns Hopkins Center for Surgical Trials and Outcomes Research.
His research has spanned critical healthcare topics such as cancer care, obesity, aging, antibiotic resistance, Alzheimer’s, and the impact of the Orphan Drug Act. One of his most notable contributions was co-developing the widely used Surgery Checklist, now a staple in operating rooms worldwide.
Dr. Makary is a member of the National Academy of Medicine and has served as a visiting professor at more than 25 medical schools both in the U.S. and internationally.
His educational background includes Bucknell University, Thomas Jefferson University, and the Harvard School of Public Health. He trained at Georgetown University and Johns Hopkins, where he later became a full professor and held an endowed chair in gastrointestinal surgery. Dr. Makary has also held joint appointments at the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health and the Carey Business School.
