Three Ports Closed in Brazil as Massive Floods Cause Chaos

Extremely heavy rains affecting Southern Brazil since late April have caused several rivers to completely overrun their banks.  Rainfall has totaled over 300mm/0.9ft in less than a week, with some regions reaching almost twice that.  A state of public calamity has been declared.

The river running through the state capital of Porto Alegre is more than 5m/16ft above its normal level.  The dam on the Anta River, which powers the Julho hydroelectric plant has also been breached and the plant has been shut down.

85 People are reported to have lost their lives with more than 130 more still unaccounted for.  19,000 People have been made homeless and the floods have displaced over 150,000.  Most operations in the region are shut down, including the ports of Porto Alegre, Rio Grande, and Tramandai.  The Salgado Filho International Airport is also flooded and closed to flights.

Most industry in the region is affected by this catastrophe and no shipments will be moving in or out of the region for the foreseeable future.

Communications with production, manufacturing, and importers and exporters in the region will be greatly affected too.
