On October 22, 2018 Erin Ennis Vice-President of the US-China Business Council, addressed the Western Cargo Conference, The Pacific Coast Council’s annual meeting. She stressed the importance of US companies telling their story to Congress and the government agencies regarding the effect of the Section 301 China tariffs on their businesses, and how even further damaging the progression to 25% tariffs on goods of Chinese origin would be. She said that the duties will total $267 billion; and raised the issue of the duties as a device to make China back off unfair trade practices, or if duties were the goal themselves. Most businesses will be unable to offset or absorb the proposed increase to 25 percent scheduled to take effect on Jan. 1.
